Resin bound pool surround for a Georgian property in Horsham
When a new outdoor swimming pool was installed by the owner of this Georgian house in Horsham, the ground nearby proved to be a problem. The land had a slope, the level dropping off towards one end of the pool – a typical problem on older garden areas where the ground had never been levelled. It was necessary to have a smooth and good-quality finish that could cope with the site’s conditions and match the character of the property. Resin bound paving for the swimming pool surround in Metro grey was the suitable solution.

“I could not be happier with the resin-bound finish surrounding my pool. This was the perfect finishing touch the pool needed for a quality final look.”

The result
The garden now has a quality that it didn’t have earlier – a smooth, even surface which fits neatly against both the pool structure and the tiling adjacent to the retaining wall. The Metro grey finish is appropriate for the property since it is cool, modern and modest without contrasting with the house’s Georgian architecture.
The client now has a pool surround that is:
• seamless in finish – no joints, no visible transitions
• safe underfoot – grip aggregate applied across the full surface
• fully permeable and built to drain effectively on a sloped site
• low maintenance and built to last
The challenge
The pool was installed by a pool company in a garden area that originally had uneven ground, the ground sloping down towards one end. The landscaper had laid tiles around the retaining wall, so the inner part of the pool surround had to be raised and then finished off. The difficulty was in producing a smooth and even, high-quality finish on a site that was neither level nor simple.
The key requirements were:
• a base build-up that could accommodate the sloped and uneven ground
• a permeable system to handle drainage on the sloped site
• a surface that would sit cleanly alongside the pool company’s tiling
• grip underfoot given the poolside context
Why resin worked well for this project
Because of the inclined ground and the fact that it was to be situated by a pool, the project required careful consideration both of the base and of the surface. A conventional solid base would not have dealt adequately with drainage on a site which slopes down to one end. Instead, a porous sub-base together with porous tarmac, covered by the resin-bound finish, resulted in a completely permeable system that allows water to drain through the surface rather than directing it across it.
Resin bound paving offered several specific advantages for this project:
- porous sub-base and tarmac handle drainage on the sloped site effectively
- seamless finish works cleanly alongside the pool tiling and retaining wall
- Metro grey is a considered choice for a Georgian property – contemporary without being harsh
- grip aggregate ensures safety underfoot in a wet poolside environment
- low maintenance – no joints, no grout, easy to keep clean
