Resin bound paving specifications
These specification sheets cover the sub-base construction requirements for resin bound paving across a range of applications – from private residential driveways through to public car parks and commercial access roads. Each spec defines the correct base build-up, material requirements and depth tolerances for that application. If you are unsure which spec applies to your project, get in touch and we will advise.
Which specification do I need?
The right specification depends on two things: the application type (driveway, pathway, car park etc.) and whether you need a permeable or non-permeable surface.
For most front residential driveways, a permeable surface is required under planning guidance – Specification 1 is the standard starting point. For rear driveways and patios where permeability is not a planning requirement, a non-permeable base (Specifications 6 or 7) may be appropriate depending on what is already there.
For commercial applications – car parks, public paving, access roads – Specifications 3, 4 and 5 cover the range of loading requirements from pedestrian-only through to occasional heavy vehicle access.
If you have specific loading requirements, unusual ground conditions or a tree pit situation, contact us before specifying – we can advise on the right approach.
Residential Specifications
The following specifications cover private residential applications. Each PDF includes the full construction detail, material requirements, depths and tolerances.
Permeable Private Driveway
SuDS compliant. For new or replacement front driveways requiring a permeable surface under planning guidance. Includes base build-up over a porous asphalt or open-graded sub-base.
Permeable Private Pathway
SuDS compliant. For residential garden paths, entrance paths and side access routes requiring a permeable surface.
Non-Permeable Private Driveway
For rear driveways and private areas where permeability is not required. Laid over a new concrete base. Not SuDS compliant.
Non-Permeable Private Pathway
For private paths where permeability is not required. Laid over a new concrete base. Not SuDS compliant.
Commercial & Public Specifications
The following specifications cover commercial, public and higher-loading applications.
Permeable Public Car Park & Access Road
SuDS compliant. For car parks and access roads with regular vehicle loading. Higher sub-base specification to accommodate weight and frequency of use.
Urban Public Paving (Non-Permeable)
For urban public paving with occasional maintenance vehicle access. Non-porous base. Suitable where drainage infrastructure is in place.
Urban Permeable Public Paving
SuDS compliant. For urban public paving with occasional maintenance vehicle access requiring a permeable surface.
Tree Pit – Heavy Pedestrian Traffic
SuDS compliant. Specialist specification for resin bound paving around tree pits in high footfall areas. Maintains groundwater access for tree root health.
How thick should resin bound paving be?
Resin bound paving is typically laid at 15mm depth for footpaths, patios and pool surrounds, and 18mm for driveways and car parks. These are standard depths for normal residential loading. Higher-loading commercial applications may require greater depth – the relevant specification sheet defines the correct tolerances for each use case
What sub-base is required for resin bound paving?
The sub-base requirement depends on whether you need a permeable or non-permeable surface. A permeable surface requires a porous or open-graded sub-base – typically MOT Type 3 or porous asphalt – so that water can drain through. A non-permeable surface can use a concrete or standard tarmac base. The correct build-up for each application is defined in the relevant specification sheet above.
What loading can resin bound paving take?
Standard residential specification (Spec 1) is designed for private driveway use – regular car and light vehicle traffic. For higher loading – car parks, access roads, fire engine routes or areas with frequent heavy vehicle movement – a commercial specification is required. We can advise on the right specification if you describe the intended use and expected traffic.
Are these specifications suitable for listed buildings or conservation areas?
Yes, in most cases. Resin bound paving has been approved for use at listed and historic properties including National Trust sites. The specification requirements are the same regardless of the property type – the key consideration is whether planning or listed building consent is needed for the work itself, rather than the surface specification. We can advise on both.
