Resin bound shared paths and entrances for a residential development in Horsham

The shared paths and entrances at this residential development in Horsham had become a problem. Uneven, worn and presenting a trip hazard for some of the older residents, the existing tar and chip surface was well past its useful life. The brief was to replace it with something smooth, safe and in keeping with the gardens that surround the properties. At 460m², this is one of the larger residential path installations we have completed.

“A complete transformation from a dingy, scruffy, unsightly area to one of outstanding beauty. Your team of young men were exceptional.”

Ruth Shirley, Resident
Horsham, West Sussex

The result

The transformation is significant. What had been described as a dingy, scruffy area is now, in Ruth’s words, “one of outstanding beauty”. The Seville heritage colour sits warmly against the surrounding gardens, and the smooth, level surface makes the paths safe and accessible for all residents including older members of the community.

The development now has shared paths and entrances that are:

  • smooth, level and free from trip hazards
  • safe and accessible for elderly residents
  • low maintenance – no weeds, no loose material
  • visually in keeping with the surrounding gardens
  • completed on time and to the satisfaction of all residents

The challenge

The existing tar and chip surface had deteriorated significantly. Uneven in places and presenting a trip hazard, it was a particular concern for older residents who use the shared paths daily. The surface also did nothing to complement the well-kept gardens that surround the properties – it had simply become something to look past rather than something that added to the setting.

The key requirements were:

  • a surface smooth and level enough to be genuinely safe for all residents
  • something that would complement rather than detract from the gardens
  • a finish that would last and require minimal upkeep
  • new recessed manhole covers to give a clean, uninterrupted finish across the paths

Why resin worked well for this project

Shared residential paths and entrances have specific requirements that resin bound paving addresses well. The surface needs to be smooth and level – important for any pedestrian area, but especially so where older or less mobile residents use it daily. Resin bound delivers this in a way that block paving or tarmac does not: no joints, no loose material, no surfaces that shift or settle unevenly over time.

For this development, resin offered several advantages:

  • smooth, joint-free surface – safe underfoot for all residents
  • laid at 20mm depth on the existing tar and chip base – no dig-out required
  • Seville heritage finish complements the gardens and period character of the properties
  • recessed manhole covers give a clean, uninterrupted finish
  • low maintenance – no repointing, no weeds, minimal upkeep for the residents
